Back to school with Bryana Salaz from The Voice

Balancing the stage and school

The halls of Mascoutah High School are rarely quiet, but these days one whisper is louder than the rest.

"I get really awkward stares sometimes I feel like is that her?" Bryana Salaz explains.

She is the five foot three 17 year old who got Adam, Blake and Gwen to turn for her rendition of Problem.

Now she's on Team Gwen competing on the live shows.

"One thing Gwen asked me was would you ever sing and dance at the same time and I was like yeah I would love that!" Salaz points out.

She also got advice from Taylor Swift.

"Meeting Taylor Swift oh my goodness that was like the highlight of my life," Salaz says.

It's a ride she's not ready to get off just yet.

"I'm so excited because now I know for a fact this is what I want to do and I'm here to compete, I may be young but I'm a contender," she adds.

But in the meantime she's also trying to manage high school. The blinds were taped months ago and she's been sitting on this secret since, well she did share it with her bff's.

"It was so weird because when we watched her in the blind auditions she was actually sitting right next to me so I was looking at her and her on the TV and it was the strangest thing," explains Kate Rosenstengel, a Junior at Mascoutah High School.

"She was on TV the first time and we were just sitting there shaking for her, like it was so nerve wracking even though we knew what was going to happen," adds Amanda Surmeier, a Senior.

So just imagine what it was like for her parents waiting for a chair to turn.

"It's very nerve wracking, but it's exciting too. I'm just glad to see her doing her thing which she loves to do," Maria Salaz, Bryana's mom says.

"You're happy and you're nervous at the same time. It's just like a blender of emotions going through you, it's awesome," adds Colonel Ed Salaza, Bryana's dad.

Now family, friends and fans have to wait and see what's next. What we do know is this is just the beginning for Bryana and her big voice.

"No matter what happens on The Voice, even if I get out in the next round there is no way I'm going to stop. I feel like this is just my beginning," Salaz says.
