When should you replace a car seat after an accident?

Andy Crouppen, of Brown & Crouppen, has some advice on how to tell if a car seat is damaged after a car accident.

Today we have an important reminder about car seats from Andy Crouppen, of Brown & Crouppen. If one is damaged in an accident, it needs to be replaced.

Damage isn’t always visible, so how do you know if there is any? Andy says that if there is an accident, there are five things to look for to determine whether you need to replace the car seat:

  1. See if there is any visible damage
  2. See if there is visible damage to the door closest to the car seat
  3. Can the car be driven away?
  4. Did any airbags deploy?
  5. Was anyone in the car injured?

If none of those 5 things happen, Andy explains that the car seat is most likely alright and does not need to be replaced. If any one of those things does happen, then the car seat should be replaced. Andy says that auto accidents are the leading cause of death in kids, so proper car seats are very important to keep them safe. It is very important to have your kids in the proper car seat, that they are positioned properly, and that the seat is adjusted properly.

There are several resources to get advice on how to use your car seat and to see what seat your child should be in. You can ask your pediatrician or even stop by most local fire stations to see how to install your seat properly.
