The number of people dealing with depression, bipolar disorders, addiction, PTSD, ADHD, and even suicide is increasing throughout the country. A new book called, The End of Mental Illness, dives into why standard treatments and success rates have barely changed in the last 70 years. Dr. Daniel G. Amen, bestselling author and Psychiatrist, wrote this book and is here to tell us more.
First, why is the term mental illness considered an inaccurate label that could be harmful? Dr. Amen says that during his 40 years of being a Psychiatrist, he has always disliked the term mental illness. He explains that this term shames people, is stigmatizing, and is wrong. Based on his work with over 160,000 brain scans over the last 30 years, he and his team have come to realize that most psychiatric issues are not mental health issues at all but rather brain health issues that affect your mind.
So, Dr. Amen says if you can get your brain right, your mind will follow. Your brain can have problems just like your heart can have problems, so no one should be shamed for having a brain health issue. Changing the mindset on this issue can decrease shame and guilt and increase compassion for people seeking help.
Dr. Amen explains that the most important lesson in his book is that you are not stuck with the brain that you have. You can make your brain better, and with a better brain your mood will be better. His book also notes an interesting study he and his team did on NFL players who have experienced brain damage.
