Drowning is the leading cause of death for children: SWIM ON Foundation shares safety tips

Drowning is the most preventable accidental injury. SWIM ON shares tips to keep in mind this summer.

ST. LOUIS — Safer Waters In Memory Of Nicholas, or the SWIM ON Foundation, is a non-profit that exists to prevent drowning by raising awareness about drowning, informing people about the ways to prevent drowning and by implementing programs that can reduce drowning. 

Friday morning, Birch McMullin, owner of British Swim School, joined Mary in studio to share tips for summertime swimming. He shares drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1- 4. Drowning is fast and silent, yet it is the most preventable accidental injury. 

SWIM ON Foundation uses the acronym SAFER for the 5 layers of protection for swim safety. 

S: For swim lessons which can reduce drowning by 88%.  

A: For Adult supervision with Water Watcher badges that designate committed supervision.  

F: For Fences and barriers which when properly installed can reduce child drowning by 50%

E: For Emergency preparedness and knowing CPR

R: For Regulation flotation

SWIM ON Foundation is providing financial assistance for swim lessons in North County with instruction from instructors from British Swim School.  SWIM ON Foundation is also providing CPR instruction at CPR “Parties” at people’s houses with groups of 8 - 10 people for hands-on training in CPR.
