"It's an honor to be recognized by your peers at the highest level," Sterling K Brown said.
On January 23rd, the St. Louis native took to social media moments after being nominated for Best Supporting Actor in his latest film American Fiction.
"I got nominated for an Oscar," said Brown, "I got the news and I still had to get my kids to school and I still had to make them breakfast. But you have a moment where you're just like this is very cool."
American Fiction depicts a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes.
"The movie sort of highlights in literature, in film, and in media a very narrow depiction of black life that has been sold to mainstream audience as the status quota, so that if it's not a story of poverty, or overcoming some sort of poverty, or slavery then it doesn't seem like it's a black story," Brown said.
Sterling K Brown plays the role of Clifford Ellison.
"He is 20years in the closest and is married with 2 kids. His wife catches him in bed with another man and his life kind of explodes," Brown said.
Alongside Brown is Jeffery Wright who's also up for a nomination for Best Lead Actor.
"The script was so good I knew that it was an opportunity for us as black people to be seen in a different light and it was too good of an opportunity to pass up," Sterling K Brown said.
American Fiction has received lots of praise with a rotten tomato score of 94%. A long list of accolades and now nominations for Oscars.
"I'm happy to be invited to the party, like, I have no expectations. Somebody asked me the other day what kind of speech will you give if you win and I was like it will be the most extemporaneous speech you've ever heard because I don't got nothing planned,"Brown said.
The Oscars will air March 10th at 6PM on ABC be sure to tune in.
Brown says he has multiple upcoming project with the likes of Dan Fogelman and Jennifer Lopez.
