Summer camp opportunities at Webster University

14 to 18-year-old campers can learn the basics of scriptwriting, animation, film production, and game design from working professionals.

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — If you’re looking for fun and educational summer camp opportunities for your children, look no further than Webster University!

From sports to the arts and even chess, there is something for everyone at any age throughout June and July.

14 to 18-year-old campers can learn the basics of scriptwriting, animation, film production, and game design from working professionals.

Matthew Burton is a game design instructor for the university. "Around this age, 14 to 18, kids are looking for a craft that they can really sink their effort into and be passionate about. And these camps offer that, and we offer all the resources and tools to bring your creative vision to life," Burton said.

In the game design camp, campers will be introduced to every role you might take within a game studio. Whether it's programming, sound design, or animation, they will get a crash course in the tools and techniques for each role.

"It gives the opportunity for students to say, oh, I really liked when we did sound design. And then we'll use that knowledge and that experience to work in a team-based environment to build a project. So some sort of game that we're working on for the rest of the camp," Burton said.

Carl Nappa is the Audio Department Chair at Webster.

"This is the first time Webster has had an audio recording summer camp pre-pandemic, and it's going to be a nice overall look into the world of what's behind me.  So, students are going to be shown some software, which is the new way of recording, right, but still get a chance to learn the old analog way," Nappa said.

Whether it’s audio recording, film production, or game design, campers will have the chance to get hands-on with some old-school technology along with the new.

"If a student wants to build a game or create a film, it's very hard to do that with just your basic camera equipment or game design technology or an audio suite that we have, or an LED video wall, and we have the opportunity to explore all that while they're here," Burton said.

The Game Design Camp takes place June 10-14 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The Sound Recording Camp is happening June 24-28, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

These are just two of the many summer camp options Webster University is offering in 2024! For a full list visit webster.edu/summer.
