ST. LOUIS — The 114th annual Annie Malone May Day Parade was held on Sunday, May 19.
The parade began at Market and Jefferson and went through Downtown St. Louis.
Of the tens of thousands of people lining the streets, many are with family members.
Paradegoer Brenna Tarkington watched with her children. "These are my three. They can see the tradition, and they can do fun things other than play on their phones and tablets and also get to know the history of St. Louis," she said.
The Annie Malone May Day Parade is one of the oldest and largest parades in the area. It began in 1910, and for many years it was held in north St. Louis. Some spectators have been attending since the 1970s and reminisced on memories of the parade being held on Natural Bridge Road.
The namesake of the parade, St. Louisan Annie Malone, was a pioneer of the African-American beauty industry. She became a millionaire.
Now, the organization Annie Malone Children & Family Service Center continues her legacy by improving the quality of life for children and families in our community.
With the cars, the bands, and of course, the candy, the Annie Malone May Day Parade brings us the sights and sounds of the community in St. Louis.
