ST. LOUIS — On Saturday morning, The Susan G. Komen Foundation “More Than Pink” Walk took over Tower Grove Park.
5 On Your Side's Kay Quinn served as the emcee for the annual event that aims to raise money for breast cancer research.
Among the thousands of people in the park is Barbara Balcom, a US Army veteran battling breast cancer. She introduced us to her army of supporters.
"I went to basic training with Lana, and this is Britney. She works at the VA Hospital. She was one of the people that took care of me during my chemo," Balcom said.
Komen Development Director Dawna Currigan says a rainy start did not keep people away.
"As soon as we started walking the sun started shining...it was perfect," Currigan said.
The sun broke through the trees just as walkers hit the trail toward a brighter future for breast cancer survivors like Barbara.
Her friend Leah Caprio said, "I love everything about her (Barbara). It was a no-brainer to come out and support."
In honor of their friend Shanta Coffman, Team Shanta went with a Dr. Seuss themed look for the walk and they went all out on their makeup!
"It's my 12th year. I am a 12 year survivor. The weather is nice and the rain broke," Shanta said.
And the sun shined on the sights and sounds of hope in St. Louis.
