The many Cardinal hats of St. Louis's 'Hat Guy'

If you've been to the pre party on opening day you've probably seen him, you might have even had your picture taken with him, but chances are you don't know his name you simply know him as the 'Hat Guy'.

His work greets you at the door of UMSL Postal Services.

Wearable pieces of art that have been an opening day tradition for Tom Lange since 2006 when the gates at the new Busch Stadium first swung open.

Hats that honor some of the best players to wear the birds on the bat.

But there's more to these lavish lids...than meets the eye.

Each one has a story...

"When I started doing the bobbleheads my idea was to use some of the ceramic ones of current players but as I started putting them on the hat they were breaking," said Tom Lange.

And well there's no DL in this office

"DL list on mine goes in the trash can."

So he found plastic ones and this year's creation..

"I decided to do a tribute to Jack Buck go crazy folks, go crazy!"

On average...he spends three or four months drilling... and twisting...cutting and carefully balancing out each little object.

Many of which he had to create from scratch and make no mistake, Tom is a man who suffers for his art more than most because these things aren't light.

It's pain he'll happily endure for a day because this is an accessory that tends to draw a crowd and cameras.

"I've been so honored the fans love the hats," said Lange.

"I'm a hair guy, I'm not a hat guy..probably the only time I wore a hat before that was fishing."
