Downtown mural promotes COVID-19 safety through famous paintings

Each painting is spaced six feet apart and will promote public health measures such as wearing a mask, social distancing and hand-washing

ST. LOUIS — Two St. Louis artists are using their craft to spread the word about staying safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Dan Ricketts of St. Louis Sign and Mural is painting the side of a downtown building at 11th and Walnut streets at the request of the building’s owner. With the help of fellow artist Evan Nichols of Top Coat Sign, he’s painting three portraits featuring famous paintings from Frida Kahlo, Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Michelangelo.

Each painting is spaced 6 feet apart and will promote public health measures such as wearing a mask, social distancing and hand-washing, Ricketts said. One of the paintings features a famous portrait of Vincent Van Gogh altered so that he’s wearing a mask.

The pair started work on the painting Monday and will be finished in a few days, Ricketts said.
