Adopt a red kangaroo for Mother's Day gift at Saint Louis Zoo

The proceeds from the adoption will go directly to the care and feeding of the animals at the zoo.

ST. LOUIS — Here's your opportunity to do something for your favorite mother in the animal kingdom this Mother's Day!

Adopt a red kangaroo, also known as Macropus rufus, at the Saint Louis Zoo in honor of all types of maternal caregivers during this spring holiday season. 

The zoo said it's providing an adoption package that includes:

  • 12-inch red kangaroo plush toy with a 2024 commemorative tag.
  • Name on the Zoo Parents Recognition Wall and stlzoo.org for one year.
  • Personalized adoption certificate.
  • Greeting card from you.
  • Color photo with animal facts and a car decal.
  • Invitation to the Zoo Parents Picnic.

Those who are interested in adoption can also order by phone at (314) 646-4771 or visit a Welcome Desk during your next visit to the zoo. The zoo is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 

You can make a walk-in order until May 12. There are opportunities to receive a take-home discount as a result of your purchase. Speak to a Welcome Desk representative for details.

The zoo will mail your order within 14 to 21 days of receipt. Please allow us as much time as possible when placing your order for delivery, the zoo said on its website. 

Red kangaroos are within the Macropodidae family, which means their closest relatives are the wallaby, wallaroo and quokka, according to the zoo. 

They typically travel in mobs with most of them being able to run at nearly 35 miles per hour when in the wild.
