ST. LOUIS — The Dutchtown community is rallying behind a popular female-owned restaurant.
Tacos La Jefa posted on social media a few days ago that it may have to close after the owners trusted someone to manage their business. The post said the team was struggling to survive after being left with unpaid taxes, bills, and expenses.
Since then, Tacos La Jefa created a GoFundMe page asking to help raise $5,000.
Many in the neighborhood showed up to order food. A 5 On Your Side journalist swung by for lunch and arrived to a packed restaurant with only two people working -- many ordering the restaurant's famous birria plates and tacos. The Facebook page Taste of North St. Louis and Beyond asked people to support by ordering and eating tacos, contributing to their GoFundMe page, sharing their story, or even considering investing in the business.
Tacos La Jefa means "Girl Boss Tacos" and it was a dream started by Heriberta Amescua, known as "La Jefa". She passed away in 2021, but the restaurant carries on her legacy.
As of the publishing date, the restaurant was short $500 of its fundraising goal.
