Vatican rules on appeals of Saint Matthew the Apostle, Our Lady of Sorrows

In a press release, the archdiocese said the Vatican upheld the decisions on Saint Matthew the Apostle and Our Lady of Sorrows.

ST. LOUIS — The Vatican this week upheld two more decisions on parishes as part of the Archdiocese of St. Louis Archdiocese's All Things New restructuring plan.

In a press release, the archdiocese said the Vatican upheld the decisions on Saint Matthew the Apostle and Our Lady of Sorrows.

Under the plan, which was decreed on May 24, 2023, Saint Matthew the Apostle was ordered to merge into a new parish temporarily named Our Lady of the Holy Cross, Saint Augustine, Saint Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist, and Saint Matthew the Apostle Parish.

In the same decree, Our Lady of Sorrows was ordered to merge into a newly erected parish temporarily named Our Lady of Sorrows, Saint Mary Magdalen, and Saint Joan of Arc Parish.

The following parishes still have appeals outstanding with the Vatican:

  • St. Bernadette
  • St. Agnes
  • St. Lawrence

The Vatican has in recent months handed down several decisions on local parishes that appealed their closures, the most recent being St. Paul parish in Berger parish, which also had its petition rejected in June.
