Hairless heroes: Elementary students get buzz cuts to raise money for childhood cancer

Nine fifth-grade students from a Kirkwood elementary school shaved their heads for a great cause.

KIRKWOOD, Mo. – For the second straight year, Westchester Elementary teacher Brad Bray is teaching with considerably less hair on a Monday than he had when he dismissed class on Friday.

"A lot of shocked eyes. A lot of, 'What happened to your hair?'" Bray said.

He's not the only one getting looks at the school. Nine fifth grade students and one brave teacher grew their hair to lose their hair, at the annual St. Baldrick's event at Helen Fitzgerald's. The group raised more than $7,000 to help fund childhood cancer research.

"We hope it will find a cure for childhood cancer and help with their medical cost," said fifth-grader Will Boeger.

For most of the students and for Mr. Bray, it was the second year getting buzzed. Andrew Balota was the team captain who brought the idea to the group. They took the stage wearing t-shirts to honor Dawson Ivanowski. Neuroblastoma took his life nearly ten years ago at the age of eight. Andrew has heard stories of Dawson because the Ivanowki's are family friends, but none of the boys met Dawson.

"To think that a kid had cancer and passed away from it...It makes me proud to wear that shirt," said Carter Locke.
