A woman has died in the custody of Crawford County Adult Detention Facility, sheriff's office says

The Missouri Highway Patrol's division of drug and crime control will be investigating her death.

STEELVILLE, Mo. — An inmate died at the Crawford County Adult Detention Facility on Monday, according to the Crawford County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said that around 1:30 p.m., staff members at Crawford County Adult Detention Facility conducted routine checks. During that time, police said staff members found 47-year-old Stephanie Westbrook in a holding cell in medical distress. She was initially awake and responding to staff and then police said she lost consciousness. 

According to the sheriff's office, the staff immediately tried life-saving measures and EMS were called to the scene. Westbrook was later pronounced dead at the facility.

The Missouri Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control will be investigating her death. 

According to the sheriff's office, this is the first in-custody death at the facility since 2015.
