Vintage KSDK: Mardi Gras 2003 is remembered for snow

One to three inches of the white stuff fell the night before, and morning of, March 1, covering streets and floats.

ST. LOUIS — This week's Vintage KSDK is a look back at a snowy St. Louis Mardi Gras on March 1, 2003.

It was a day that began with floats and streets covered in white.

Parade-goers each had their own opinions of the weather conditions.

"It's kind of lousy out here," said one.

"It's mild. I think it's a great day for parade,” said another.

"At first, we weren't going to come because we thought it was going to be bad, but it's pretty good," said a third.

Temperatures started in the 20s and only climbed into the mid-30s, but the crowd warmed up quickly.

Even the muddy mess so many shoes created in the melting snow didn't dampen the fun.

And frigid temperatures didn't necessarily mean you had to keep clothes on. Several men took their shirts off. Others came without coats.

One woman suffered a head injury in a fall. She needed an ambulance.

The crowd was estimated at 3,000.
