Vintage KSDK: Mother Teresa visits St. Louis in June 1988

This was her second trip to the St. Louis mission, which was first opened in 1976.

ST. LOUIS — Mother Teresa of Calcutta, India, visited the St. Louis chapter of her Missionaries of Charity on June 8, 1988.

The Roman Catholic nun won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her group's work with the poor in India.

This was her second trip to the St. Louis mission, which she first opened in 1976.

Our reporter Julie Carey interviewed her outside of the house operated by the Missionaries of Charity.

"I'm with Channel Five,” said Carey. “What message have you given the sisters here today?”

“To be humble like Mary so they can be holy like Jesus,” replied Mother Teresa.

Carey asked, “What are your goals for the kind of work that they should do here?”

Mother Teresa replied, “We are trying to have a soup kitchen.”

Mother Teresa also delivered a strong pro-life message at a meeting sponsored by the group "Presbyterians for Pro Life."

The audience of about 1,400 people at the downtown Sheraton Hotel included then-Archbishop John May.

That soup kitchen Mother Teresa spoke of not only opened on North Spring in St. Louis, it still offers hot meals to those who need one every day.

The Missionaries of Charity also continue to operate a night shelter for homeless women, provide after school programs for young people, and home placement for arriving immigrants.

Mother Teresa died in 1997. She was declared a saint in 2016.
