Vintage KSDK: St. Louis Cardinals win World Series Oct. 27, 2006

It was a night fans would never forget. A roster that included Albert Pujols and Adam Wainwright sent the team’s faithful straight to baseball heaven.

ST. LOUIS — This week's Vintage KSDK goes back to Oct. 27, 2006, the night the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series.

It was a Friday night Cardinals fans would remember for the rest of their lives.

In a seven-game series against the Detroit Tigers that ran five games, the Redbirds earned their 10th championship in front of a home crowd at Busch Stadium.

Wearing the birds on the bat for that team were Albert Pujols, Adam Wainwright and Scott Rolen.

Chanting lyrics of the song “We Are the Champions,” fans didn't want to go home.

Less than 48 hours later, the excitement was still running high. A championship parade at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, brought tens of thousands to downtown St. Louis.

"We got here about 7:30 this morning,” said one fan. “I think we could have come last night, we were so excited."

The crowd, 20 people deep in places, cheered and chanted for hours.

"The energy down here is so amazing," said one fan. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. We brought our kids to see Albert Pujols."

It all ended with a rally inside Busch Stadium, one that brought ecstatic fans close enough to touch their baseball idols. All were there to celebrate their team for one last time.

"I've been waiting my whole life because I was born the year after the last one,” said one fan. “I've been waiting 23 years.”

“This is his first trip to Busch Stadium for the championship rally,” said another fan, pointing to his baby. “It's awesome. A once-in-a-lifetime deal."
