ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a $5 million overhaul of the Queeny Park recreation center at 550 Weidman Road in West County, despite a disagreement between council members.
Councilman Tim Fitch said he asked the administration of County Executive Sam Page whether the county's chosen architect, Brentwood-based Chiodini Architects, had ever made campaign donations to any county officials. Questions about donations have loomed over county government since the federal indictment last year of the previous county executive, Steve Stenger, on pay-to-play schemes.
Fitch, a Republican, said Page, a Democrat, refused to answer, and so Fitch, whose district includes the park, refused to move forward. Council Chair Lisa Clancy then carried the bill, and it advanced on a party-line vote Tuesday. A final vote remains.
"I was not able to see anything that were issues related to that," Clancy told Fitch. "And we also have some laws here in county government that prevent, related to contracts, the interference with campaign contributions."
Fitch said in an interview that he asked a county parks official, Tom Ott, about any campaign donations, and that Ott responded, "You have no authority to ask that."
