ST. LOUIS — Suzanne Sitherwood, president and CEO of St. Louis-based Spire Inc., plans to retire from the natural gas utility company at the end of 2023, after a dozen years in that post.

The company (NYSE: SR), one of the nation's largest publicly traded natural gas companies, said Wednesday in a press release that its board will hire a search firm to help it review internal and external candidates to succeed Sitherwood.

Sitherwood joined the The Laclede Group, rebranded as Spire in 2016, as president in 2011 and was promoted to CEO in 2012. She previously had been president of Atlanta Gas Light, Chattanooga Gas and Florida City Gas, all natural gas utility subsidiaries of AGL Resources, now Southern Company Gas.

As president and CEO of Spire, Sitherwood oversees its natural gas utilities in Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri, which serve nearly 1.7 million customers.
