ST. LOUIS — St. Louis-based venture capital firm Cultivation Capital has led a $2.8 million Series A funding round for mobile app startup Be My Eyes.

The startup, founded in Denmark, has developed a mobile app that is designed to help blind and visually impaired individuals and is headquartered in San Francisco. As part of the Series A financing, Paul Weber of Cultivation Capital has joined Be My Eyes’ board of directors.

The free mobile app created by Be My Eyes provides blind or visually impaired individuals with the ability to have another person describe what is in front of their phone’s camera through the use of live video. The on-demand app had been fully staffed by volunteers but Be My Eyes has turned to corporate partners, beginning 2018, to keep its product free and sustain its “purpose and profit” operating model.

Be My Eyes launched its mobile app in 2015. It expanded the app in 2018 with a “specialized help” component, bringing on major firms like Microsoft, Google and Procter & Gamble as providers for the customer support platform.
