ST. LOUIS — If you ordered online from Sephora between March 2015 and June 2021, you may soon be receiving a refund.

A $1.77 million settlement was reached earlier this year in a class action lawsuit against the beauty retailer. Femmer vs. Sephora U.S. Inc. alleged the company charged a higher tax to some Missouri customers for products shipped from outside of the state. Qualifying customers are now receiving their refunds.

St. Louis-based Orlowsky Law, LLC and Goffstein Law, LLC served as the settlement class counsel in the case.

In order to qualify for a part of the settlement, Sephora customers must have made a qualifying purchase between March 1, 2015, and June 30, 2021, via sephora.com or another remote sales channel where Sephora is responsible for calculating the tax due, according to the settlement agreement. The purchase must have been shipped from outside of the state to a Missouri address, and Sephora must have charged the customer an amount of tax that exceeded the Vendor Use Tax amount for that transaction.

Purchases will not qualify if the customer received a refund on the entire transaction, according to the settlement agreement.

No claim form is required to get your part of the class action settlement. If one or more of your transactions qualified for a refund in the settlement, an automatic PayPal payment will be sent to the email account used to make the Sephora purchase. The amount will vary based on the tax originally charged and the number of participating class members.

Refunds must be claimed within 30 days of being received via email or the funds will be returned to Legal Services of Eastern Missouri.
