5 unbelievable freebies from the St. Louis Public Library

The library provides savings in places you might not expect for art, music and the essentials.

ST. LOUIS — There are few places that can be a one-stop shop for daily essentials like food and diapers to creative services, like art and music. Libraries have become community gems, and more than likely you don't know all that they have to offer. With the holidays coming up, take note.

Here are 5 things you may not have known about what's for free or cheap at the St. Louis Public Library.

1. Notary services

Not only does the St. Louis Public Library have a notary on staff, but the library also provides free notary services. That can be a savings of several dollars and an added convenience.

2. Fishing poles and telescopes

The library allows patrons to check out all kinds of things that can be expensive. Fishing poles, telescopes, Chromebooks and Wi-Fi hotspots are just a few of the things you can check out for up to 21 days. You may have to sign up on a waitlist.

3. Creative services

You can print out art on large format printers, 3D printers or even a Cricut machine. Cricut machines are popular with crafters and can cost hundreds of dollars. The same goes for large format prints that can be larger-than-life artwork.

"I actually used a research database here at the library to find a finer image of historical St. Louis," said Liz McArthur, the head of neighborhood services. "We printed it out on canvas, and I framed it, and it's actually the piece of art in my house that gets the most compliments. And it was free."

4. Time in a recording studio

Many people don't realize you can check out time in a studio recording booth. Whether you want to create a demo tape, an audiobook, or stream something for a social media page, the opportunities are endless for bands, singers, podcasters and more.

Terrance Neal said he uses the recording booth to talk about God after he made some life changes. He's sharing his experiences on social media and uses free studio time to make it happen.

"I used to be a street dude," Neal says. "I changed my life."

5. Educational services

The library has countless databases and partnerships to help people remain learners, whether that's learning more about how to fix your car or getting tutoring services. You can also use the library for services like LinkedIn Learning and free subscriptions to news organizations like The New York Times and Consumer Reports.

The St. Louis Public Library is on trend with other public libraries throughout the country to provide other essentials like meals, diapers, and period supplies. Over time, libraries have consistently become public community centers.

"We work really hard to make sure that we're a place where people feel comfortable," said McArthur. "They can come and hang out and learn things or not learn things [and] just have a good time."
