'Tis the season for a holiday job

Now is the time to get a seasonal job whether it's to make ends meet or get a great discount.

ST. LOUIS — You might not think beyond Halloween, but retailers certainly think about you — not only as consumers but as potential new hires.

Seasonal hiring is in full swing — whether you're looking for a job that helps make ends meet or looking for a part-time job just for the discount. Maybe you're even looking for a job that could turn into a permanent source of income.

The latter tends to happen at Abigail's Gift Boutique in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood. Abigail Fisher owns the gift shop, and it is truly a local gem of the neighborhood, where you can find a gift for just about every occasion.

"I'm happy to be here in the neighborhood because our neighborhood really doesn't have anything like this," Fisher said.

Fisher is gearing up for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 25, which is one of her busiest days of the year. She's hiring new people, bringing back old people, and helping her current people get the hours they want. After being in South City for more than a decade, she knows that a lot of her seasonal workers end up sticking around.

"Usually we'll hire one to three people to help us out throughout the holiday season," Fisher said. "Chances are most of those people will stay on through the next year or two."

Nationwide, UPS is also looking to hire more than 100,000 workers for the season, with more than 1,800 in the St. Louis area. The company said it expects half of those workers to stay on permanently.

If you're looking for a luxury job just for the discount, know that they are out there, too.

Louis Vuitton is looking for a part-time associate in Plaza Frontenac, and even though the website doesn't mention the perks, some insiders said the employee discount could be up to 30% off.

Macy's plans on hiring 38,000 holiday workers and Target plans on hiring 100,000.

Amazon is adding 250,000 employees to its business to help during the holiday online buying and shipping season. It is also bumping up the average pay to $20.50 an hour in hopes of luring in new workers.
