5 ways to save big at the big screen

Here are some cheap ways to catch a film that could save you big in the Bi-State.

ST. LOUIS — Soon enough the kids will be out for winter break, and it's important to have some indoor activities that won't break the bank. We looked into some cheap options at the movies to keep kids busy but without a hefty price tag.

You can still watch a movie for $1 in the St. Louis area.

St. Andrews Cinema co-owner Krystal Nolen says a lot of people asked the newly renovated theater to bring back $1 days. She says they couldn't do it full-time, every day, but they do have $1 Wednesdays. The cinema is a second-run theater, which means the shows aren't brand new, but they're pretty close to it.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are great days to save at the movies.

Chase Park Plaza Cinemas offers $5 movies on Wednesdays. All movies are $5 unless the movie opening falls on a Wednesday. AMC Theatres and Cinemark Theatres both have quite a few $5 deals, from tickets to concessions. Marcus Theatres even has a $2 hot dog deal for its loyalty members on Tuesdays.

Season passes and discount ticket books are other ways to save.

Alamo Drafthouse offers a season pass in the Bi-State that allows you to watch up to a movie a day for $20 a month. Landmark Theatres in Plaza Frontenac even offers a discount ticket booklet that you can use at any Landmark Theatre across the country, making it a pretty nifty holiday gift for a movie lover.

Loyalty cards can help you save cash at the theatre.

You can maximize your savings by joining one of the theatre's loyalty programs. You can usually save on concessions that way as well and collect points to get discounted movie tickets. Most of the loyalty programs don't cost a thing to enter.

Don't forget to ask for a discount.

You can typically get a discount if you are a student, a senior or a retired or active military member.
