ST. LOUIS — On January 26, 1999 St. Louis received perhaps its most famous guest in the history of the city when Pope John Paul II's papal jet, the Shepherd One, landed at Lambert St. Louis International Airport.
The Pope took the St. Louis by storm during his 30 hour visit.
He blessed the millennium seal at the Cathedral Basilica, met with President Bill Clinton, Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks and Cardinals Slugger Mark McGwire, and presided over a mass to thousands at the Trans World Dome downtown.
He also took time to meet and bless those in the many crowds that followed him throughout his stay in St. Louis.
5 on Your Side was there for every moment of Pope John Paul II's visit to the gateway city. Below is a compilation of some of our best archive footage from that historic few days.
