ST. LOUIS - St. Louis is turning 250 years old in 2014, and the entire region will be decorated with fiberglass birthday cakes to mark the occasion.
The non-profit organization in charge of the celebration, STL250, will place 250 cakes around the region in 15 different counties.
"We want to make sure all the counties have representation among our cakes not just St. Louis city," Andrew Wanko, assistant to the Director of Operations at the Missouri History Museum, said.
The cakes are four feet high and will be painted by local artists.
"We hope these things are just going to pop right off the street," Wanko said.
Two hundred of the cake locations will be selected by STL250 organizers but the locations of the remaining 50 cakes will be decided by the public. CLICK HEREto vote for a location or fill in a write-in ballot for a location of your choosing. If your write-in location collects 25 votes, it will be added to the official list of the 50 possible locations.
Voting can be done once a day until Jan. 3. The 50 locations with the most votes will be announced January 6th and the cake will be delivered on the city's birthday, Feburary 14th. The cakes will stay in the location for the remainder of 2014.
An app will also be launched in February allowing the public to navigate all 250 cakes.
"Maybe people who live here will rediscover something they never knew about the city and people who are visiting, will use this as a treasure hunt to see the coolest things the city has to offer," Wanko said.
