KSDK – For yet another year, East St. Louis was ranked the most dangerous city in the countryaccording to crime data website Neighborhood Scout. On the other side of the coin, Ballwin, Mo. was ranked the 9th safest.
East St. Louis was also listed as the most dangerous city in 2012 and 2013, beating out Flint, Mich., Camden, N.J., West Memphis, Ark. and Detroit, Mich.
The rankings were compiled based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Those crimes include murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault.
According to the website, you have a 1 in 20 chance of being a victim of violent crime in East St. Louis, as compared to 1 in 241 in the rest of Illinois. In 2013, there were 221 crimes in East St. Louis per square mile.
The city of St. Louis was ranked the 12th most dangerous city in the country. It's a better ranking than 2013, when it was No. 8.
On the other side of the Arch, Ballwin was ranked the 9th safest city in the country. In Ballwin, according to Neighborhood Scout, you have a 1 in 1692 chance of becoming the victim of violent crime, a number far below both the Missouri and national averages.
