Cardinals select Zack Thompson in MLB Draft

The Kentucky pitcher has the potential to become a mid-rotation starter for St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals selected Thompson with the No.19 pick in the 2019 MLB draft Monday night, June 4. 

Thompson, out of the University of Kentucky, is a four-pitch guy: fastball, curveball, changeup and the slider.

Other than a few injury setbacks, he is known for his emotion and intensity on the mound as he just finished up his collegiate career at Kentucky, it was a very successful one.  

His finished with ranking second in fewest hits allowed per nine innings in his career (6.09), third in career winning percentage (76.2) and fourth in career strikeouts (268).  

The 6-2, 220-pound Thompson, who hails from Selma, Ind. (Wapahani High School), was the 5th pitcher selected in this year’s draft and the second lefty to go in the opening round.

“We always enter the draft trying to find someone we feel will have an impact on our Major League team with our first selection,” stated Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. “Zack was someone we identified who could do just that. We look forward to having him join the St. Louis Cardinals organization.”

Thompson was the fifth 19th round selection for the Cardinals in the past decade, joining Shelby Miller (2009), Michael Wacha (2012), lefty Marco Gonzales (2013) and infielder Nolan Gorman (2018).
