Illinois nonprofit relaunches 'Operation Connect-A-Vet'

The program makes it easy for family and friends to link veterans to lifesaving resources.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — You can make a difference in a veteran's life through Operation Connect-A-Vet. The nonprofit Illinois Joining Forces is relaunching the program.

The program makes it easy for families and friends to link veterans, service members and their families to lifesaving services. Experts said with the holiday season right around the corner, this is critical because veterans face increased isolation and challenges around that time.

Currently, the veteran population in Illinois is growing, which means an increased need for immediate and long-term support.

According to IJF, 537,000 veterans live in Illinois. At least 700 veterans are homeless and 7% live below the poverty line.

According to the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, 6,392 veterans lost their lives to suicide in 2021.

IJF officials said these numbers show the critical need veterans have for everything from housing to health services to financial assistance and job opportunities.

To get involved with Operation Connect-A-Vet and help a veteran in your life, you can do the following:

  • Reach out: Reach out to a veteran in your life and ask them how they're doing. A simple conversation can go a long way.
  • Submit a Connect-A-Vet Request: You can submit a request by calling 1-833-INFO IJF (463-6453), emailing callcenter@illinoisjoiningforces.org or using the online form here
  • Identify Services: The IJF team will connect veterans with housing, food, employment, mental health services and other critical needs.

The campaign runs from November through December.
