Stray Rescue of St. Louis receives $1M gift toward new shelter campus

The donation will go toward the new 120,000-square-foot shelter campus currently under construction in Dutchtown.

ST. LOUIS — Stray Rescue of St. Louis is another step closer to completing its new Sanctuary, Adoption & Humane Education Center thanks to a $1 million donation from local philanthropist Carol Epstein.

Stray Rescue's new shelter campus is currently under construction in Dutchtown. Once completed, the 120,000-square-foot campus will stretch over four acres and include three buildings, according to a release from the organization. The total estimated cost of the project is $20 million.

“I am continually impressed with Stray Rescue’s diligent and dedicated work within our community and have been an enthusiastic supporter of their progress for many years," Epstein said in a statement. "Animal Welfare and Humane Education for children is extremely close to my heart and is vital for improving the treatment of and compassion for animals. Our common love for animals can serve as a bridge to unite us all, which will ultimately help the community. The next generation represents the future of animal welfare, so it’s fitting the future of Stray Rescue will be named in honor of my great nephew and niece...”

The new facility will house a Humane Education Center for children, an expanded Animal Adoption Center, a Training Center and more, according to the release. It will also offer low-cost veterinary services for the community.

"We are deeply appreciative of Carol Epstein’s life-changing gift and for her visionary heart for the animals and community of St. Louis," Stray Rescue CEO Cassady Caldwell said in a statement. "We are so excited about this next chapter of Stray Rescue and are proud to have the opportunity to do even more for the animals who need us and for the people who love them. The investment that Carol is making in our organization’s future will leave a resounding legacy for generations to come!”

The new campus is expected to be completed in 3-5 years, according to Stray Rescue.
