ST. LOUIS — For the fourth consecutive year, Schnuck Markets, Inc. will offer customers the opportunity to “Round Up at the Register” to support the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis.
From Feb. 7-20, 100& of donations made at St. Louis-area Schnucks stores will support the Urban League, specifically the nonprofit organization’s Save Our Sons program.
"As we embark on another year of 'Round Up at the Register,' I am inspired by the positive changes we can make together,” Urban League CEO and President Michael P. McMillan said. “The donations from Schnucks customers play a pivotal role in supporting the Urban League’s mission to transform lives through programs and services like our Save Our Sons + Sisters program."
Schnucks Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck said, “By working together with our customers, vendors, and community partners like the Urban League, we strive to nourish people’s lives and make every community that Schnucks calls home better. At Schnucks, helping to develop the workforce is a community pillar of our company and a goal shared by the Urban League’s Save Our Sons program.”
That program seeks to help economically disadvantaged African-American men living in the St. Louis region find jobs and have the opportunity to earn livable wages. This program completes these objectives by assisting the participants in obtaining post-secondary education and job training and teaching the imperative career life skills and work ethic necessary to become successful employees in today’s workforce.
Urban League Vice-President of Development and Special Events Tom Bailey said the register donations will support the Urban League in its efforts to help members of the community.
Bailey offered evidence of the Urban League’s impact:
- The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis funds 65 programs.
- $50.7 million has gone to those programs in Missouri and Illinois.
- The organization benefited 205,000 people last year.
- The Urban League has 23 locations in and around St. Louis.
The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis is one of two affiliates in the country that serves residents of two states – in St. Louis and East St. Louis. But Bailey said as its services expand, the league needs help getting its message out to the public.
At an Urban League back-to-school event in August 2021, the late Michael Neidorff, long-time CEO of Centene, sang the praises of the St. Louis organization.
“There is no Urban League in this country that comes close to doing what this group does,” Neidorff said. “They serve so many people in need in such an effective way. They provide leadership. They are the number one affiliate, by far, and Michael McMillan and his team - what they’re doing to help people in need - makes us so proud to be a part of St. Louis.”
In 2023, Schnucks and its customers donated $120,000 to the Urban League as part of the "Round Up at the Register" campaign.
