14-year-old injured as kids shooting fireworks at each other turns to gunfire

Police said a large group of unsupervised kids was gathered in the area of Highland Avenue and Webster Street when the incident happened.

ALTON, Ill. — A 14-year-old boy was injured Friday night in Alton after police said what began as children shooting fireworks at each other escalated to gunfire.

Police said a large group of unsupervised kids was gathered in the area of Highland Avenue and Webster Street when the teen was shot at about 9:30 p.m. He was taken to Alton Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The hospital was placed on lockdown for a short amount of time out of "an abundance of caution."

The teen was later transferred to a St. Louis area hospital. His vital signs were stable, police said.
