Police suspect son killed mother before shooting himself at Pacific home

Police said preliminary investigation suggested the shooting was a murder-suicide.

PACIFIC, Mo. — A man and woman were found shot to death Monday afternoon inside a home in Pacific, an incident police are now investigating as a murder-suicide.

The Pacific Police Department said a family member called 911 at about 1:45 p.m. after finding the pair dead inside a home on Cedar Ridge Drive. The family member had gone to the home after making several failed attempts to reach someone, police said.

The woman was identified as 56-year-old Mary Gan on Tuesday, according to Pacific Interim Chief Major Don Locke. The man has not been identified, but police believe he is Gan's 26-year-old son.

Gan reportedly suffered a gunshot wound and the man suffered from what is consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Pacific Police Department and Franklin County Sheriff's Office are leading a joint investigation into their deaths. The investigation remains ongoing.

Neighbors who live on Cedar Ridge Drive said they were shocked to see the street blocked off when they came home from work.

"I parked my truck and saw the hills closed off and knew it was a big story up there. That never happens in subdivisions like this. So we knew something was going on," neighbor Nick Cokley said.

One neighbor said she's been a teacher in the area for years and knew the family that lives there.

"It's sad, definitely for the family. Of course, it's sad that members will have to go on without their family. And it's scary that you're in a community that is so tight-knit. And our houses are, we're right next to each other," neighbor Genetta Tomnitz-Sucher said.

She said police patrol the area frequently because schools are close by.

"It shakes you, you're six houses down from where two people were killed. Our kids, you know, ride their bikes down here, anything could have happened," Tomnitz-Sucher said.

Cokley said while they're all adults now, he went to school with the two kids who lived there, and his mom was friends with their mom for a long time.

"We're all just heartbroken. So prayers to the family, condolences to the family. And I hope we'll start the healing process soon," he said.
