WOOD RIVER, Ill. — An investigation is underway after an apparent domestic dispute in Madison County, Illinois, left two men shot early Tuesday morning. One of them was accused of assaulting the other's daughter before the shooting.
Wood River police said it received a call regarding a domestic battery incident shortly after 2:30 a.m. They said a man and woman, who share a child, allegedly had a dispute.
After the dispute, the woman went to her parents’ house and called the police.
The woman went back to her home where the domestic incident initially happened, and then her father took off and left the house, police said.
"While my officers were investigating that, we received a shots fired call," Wood River Police Chief Brad Wells said.
Wells said that just before 3 a.m., officers responded to 6th Street and Lorena Avenue where they found two men who allegedly shot and injured one another.
Paramedics transported one man to a local hospital by helicopter and the other by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Wells.
Two neighbors, one of whom called 911, said they heard the first gunshot and went outside. The other neighbor said they saw the second shot fired as one man stood over the other.
Wood River police said they recovered one handgun from the scene but don't believe there was another gun involved in the shooting.
"This is not a random act of violence. This is two people that had a situation going on and they know each other," Wells said.
No charges have been filed at this time. The domestic battery incident and shooting remain under investigation.
Wood River police said the case will then be turned over to the Madison County State Attorney's Office.
