More than $50K raised for family of 16-year-old hockey player struck by stray bullet in St. Louis

Colin Brown has been in the hospital since Saturday.

ST. LOUIS — Thousands of dollars are pouring in for 16-year-old CBC hockey player Colin Brown.

The overwhelming support, trying to uplift the teen hit by a stray bullet.

It's been 72 hours since Colin and his father were in the car driving on Interstate 55 when gunfire erupted in St. Louis.

Brown has been in the hospital since Saturday.

St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy called it an "unfortunate, tragic reckless incident, someone shooting a firearm, possibly shooting at another person going a different direction on the highway."

As police continue their work, the community does too.

Multiple fundraisers are underway, including one by Dawg Nation.

Dawg Nation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting hockey players, and it partnered with CBC and Affton Hockey.

The St. Louis chapter recognized the gravity of Colin's circumstance and agreed to do a 3-to-1 match of up to $2,500.

As of noon Tuesday, it raised more than $50,000, which includes their match.

"This is the largest amount of money within 24-hour time frame that we've seen," said the local chapter's board chairman, Ed Larkin.

The nonprofit's organizers said it's more than raising funds; it's about raising spirits.

Board member Ryan Mahoney said, "Many times we can feel helpless, as a community, when this has happens and it's such a senseless tragedy and anyone who's driven those late nights with their hockey player, in their car after a game, can feel this."

From fundraisers, to vigils, to prayers, to hockey sticks outside of homes, the organizers have seen the support.

The local chapter's president and CEO, Jared Schmierbach, said, "Unfortunately with what we do with this charity, you're exposed to a lot of bad things. But you do see a lot of good."

Right now, police also need help.

The shooting happened on I-55 near the Loughbourough exit.

Investigators are asking if anyone saw anything to reach out to Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-8477(TIPS).
