BRENTWOOD, Mo. — A man was arrested after victims told police he tried to carjack them in Brentwood Tuesday.
Davenir Jefferson was charged with vehicle hijacking and multiple other crimes after police said he tried to force a woman out of her car and shot at a second car when a man tried to get away.
According to charging documents, officers with the Brentwood Police Department were called to the 8000 block of Flamingo Drive for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they took Jefferson into custody and recovered a gun.
During their investigation, detectives spoke with a woman who said she was exiting her car in front of her home when she was approached by Jefferson. She told police Jefferson emerged from the bushes with a gun yelling, "Let me get that car."
The woman told police she got back into the car and locked the doors, but Jefferson started banging on the windows. She sped off and later identified Jefferson as the person who tried to take her car.
Police said after the woman drove away, Jefferson then tried to force a man from his car. The man told police he was getting out of his car when he saw Jefferson yelling. The man said he got back into his car, at which time he heard gunshots and looked in his rearview mirror to see Jefferson firing a handgun.
The man's car was struck by gunfire, which shattered the front, passenger window of the car.
Police found five shell casings on the ground in the area of the reported shooting.
According to charging documents, Jefferson admitted to approaching the female victim in an interview with police.
In all, he was charged with vehicle hijacking, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm.
