St. Louis officer suffers serious eye injury after attempting to arrest suspect, police say

Police said the girl grabbed the officer's flashlight from his duty belt and hit him in the face several times.

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis police officer was transported to a local hospital with a serious eye injury after attempting to arrest a suspect, police said.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance call around 6:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of Carter Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers noticed a physical altercation between a 16-year-old girl and a 35-year-old woman. The officers successfully separated them before the girl ran toward the woman in what police thought was "an attempt to become involved in another physical altercation.”

An officer with 17 years of service grabbed the girl and attempted to arrest her. The woman grabbed the officer from behind and began pulling him off the girl, according to police.

Police said the girl grabbed the officer's flashlight from his duty belt and hit him in the face several times.

The 55-year-old officer suffered a serious injury to his left eye. St. Louis police did not provide an update on the officer's condition as of Saturday afternoon.

Both the girl and woman were eventually arrested.

The girl was taken to the Juvenile Detention Facility, where she was held on suspicion of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, fourth-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and attempting escape from custody.

The woman was being held at the St. Louis City Justice Center on suspicion of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer and interfering with a police officer.

The incident remains under investigation.
