ST. LOUIS — A man was charged Sunday in connection with a June shooting that left one person dead and five others injured near Citygarden in downtown St. Louis

Jherrit Stansberry, 23, was charged with one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action in connection with the June 23 shooting.

According to a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, investigators believe a fight broke out between women in the park downtown. At some point, men got involved, and gunfire was exchanged.

According to the probable cause statement, one of the victims told police he saw Stansberry shoot him from behind.

Police then interviewed Stansberry, who admitted he was in the area at the time of the shooting. Police also said Stansberry posted on Instagram showing that he was in the area at the time.

Police said the man killed was in his 20s. The other shooting victims included an 18-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old man. Police said they were all treated at an area hospital.

The St. Louis circuit attorney's office issued at-large warrants against Stansberry. He was taken into custody over the weekend.
