1 dead, 5 injured in Sunday morning shooting in downtown St. Louis

In a post on X, the St. Louis Police Department posted that “officers are on scene of a shooting near 10th and Market (streets).”

ST. LOUIS — At least six people were shot —one fatally — early Sunday morning in the heart of downtown St. Louis, police said.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said that “officers are on scene of a shooting near 10th and Market (streets).” The location is adjacent to City Garden— just two blocks northwest of Busch Stadium.

The department said one person died at the scene and at least five other people were injured. According to police, the victim who died is a man in his mid-20s.

As of Monday morning, an 18-year-old man was in critical condition from his injuries. The other victims included a 21-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known, but police said the victims were transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate shortly after the violence started at about 2:30 a.m.

According to an SLMPD spokesperson, investigators believe a fight broke out between women in the park downtown. At some point, men got involved, and gunfire was exchanged. According to the spokesperson, one firearm was discovered at the scene, but it's still too early on in the investigation to know if it was involved in the shooting.

SLMPD Director of Public Affairs and Information Division Mitch McCoy said after officers arrived at the scene, one of their officers was assaulted. He said an adult woman has been taken into custody and will be charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.

Around 12:30 a.m. officers responded to a call for disturbance with a group of people on 10th Street, near the park where the shooting occurred, McCoy said. Officers responded to the scene and cleared the area out.

"We keep saying time and time again about the extra law enforcement presence in that detail and they were here. They cleared a large group of people out, but yet somehow, within a few hours, another group came in and used this park as a hangout area, and violence erupted," he said.

McCoy added how this incident shows the ongoing problem of violence, not only in the City of St. Louis, but beyond.

"I think that this continues to prove that there's a conflict resolution issue in this city and in many major cities across the area— across the country, and we have to figure out how we can resolve problems without guns," he said.

McCoy said the people participating in the crimes will be caught.

"People who commit violence in the city of St. Louis are going to be held accountable," he said.

Police asked anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).

The fatal shooting was the 81st homicide in St. Louis in 2024, according to 5 On Your Side data.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
