Scam alert

Police in Missouri and Illinois are warning residents about phone scams that are targeting victims in the bi-state.

In Illinois, several people have reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be with the Illinois State Police or "Illinois Police." The caller either asks for a donation or tells the victim there is a warrant out for their arrest and they must send money.

The phone number usually associated with this scam caller is (618) 855-0185, but the call could come from a different number.

The ISP says it will never solicit money over the phone.

If you believe you've been a victim of this scam, call (800) 243-0618 to report it to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

On the Missouri scam, the Lake Saint Louis Police Department has issued a warning about an IRS phone scam.

The department has received reports that a caller is claiming to be from the IRS, stating the victim owes money. One person who received the call hung up, then the caller called back, saying he was an officer from the Lake Saint Louis Police Department who was contacted by the IRS. The number on the victim's caller ID was (636) 625-8018, which is the police department's phone number.

Officers say technology allows a scammer to display a false number on potential victims' caller IDs.

In a similar scam, a caller tells potential victims they've missed jury duty and a warrant is out for their arrest unless they "post bond."

Anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of a phone scam should report it to their local police department.
