ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A man is in custody after St. Louis County police said he shot and killed a brother and sister.
St. Louis County Police said it happened just after 9:30 Sunday morning on Wurdack Avenue in North St. Louis County near St. Ann.
Two neighbors were going through their morning routines when they heard several shots fired outside their homes. Both of them wanted to remain anonymous for their own safety.
“I was in the kitchen cooking breakfast with my daughter and we just heard gunshots so I told my baby to get down because I didn't know what was going on,” the woman said.
She said at first she wasn’t sure if her fiance was playing video games until she ran and knocked on his door and he peeked out their front door to see the chaos.
A neighbor on the same block was also just starting his day.
“I was down in the basement getting ready for the morning when I heard a handful of shots and I ran upstairs and saw the suspect running down the street,” the neighbor said.
That's when he said without giving it a second thought he ran out to help.
“I ran upstairs, grabbed my gun and went outside to make sure that the lady that was screaming and everything was OK,” he said.
Then he realized there was a man who'd been shot lying in the street just steps from his front door.
“I ran back inside my house, grab a belt and towels for a tourniquet so I could try to render aid but unfortunately the victim had perished,” the man said.
Halfway down the block he found another victim, a woman, who had been shot and tried to help her.
Police said she also died at the scene.
He later learned the victims were brother and sister.
When police arrived they thought the neighbor who stepped in to help was a suspect because another neighbor saw him with a gun when they called 911.
He tells 5 On Your Side he was able to explain what happened and gave investigators a description of the suspect.
“We heard from detectives, I believe the guy had ordered an Uber. He did it and then had an Uber ready for him so he could get out of here. Police saw him getting into a car and they thought it was weird. So they pulled that car over and stopped the Uber driver,” the man said.
Police said they arrested the man and recovered the gun.
While that's a relief to both neighbors, it's going to be tough to sleep at night.
“It’s just so sad. We don't really have too much happening over here. To see what's happened, it's a tragedy,” the woman said.
She said she worries for all the kids who could have been outside playing.
Her neighbor said gun violence can truly happen anywhere.
“Hold your loved ones tight. You never know. I've got two kids and I was terrified I came up made sure they were okay and got them away from the windows and everything. Just don't know what can happen,” he said.
Police have not released the names of the victims or the suspect and believe this all started because of some sort of argument.
The investigation is ongoing.
