Charges filed after police pursuit ends in crash at Overland gas station

The suspect crashed into a pump at the Mobile on the Run in the 9400 block of Page Avenue, police said.

OVERLAND, Mo. — Charges have been filed in a carjacking and police pursuit that ended in a crash Tuesday at a St. Louis County gas station.

St. Charles County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Demetrius Marcone Dent with vehicle hijacking, stealing and driving with a revoked license.

According to the St. Charles County Police Department, Dent carjacked a vehicle at the QuikTrip gas station on Highway 94 in Weldon Springs.

A husband and wife told investigators they pulled into the gas station to fill up their car. While the driver was airing up the car's tires, police said Dent hopped in the car, told the wife to get out and started driving off. The husband said he tried to stop the car from leaving but backed off when Dent tried to run him over.

St. Charles County deputies saw the vehicle but did not try to stop it, and the suspect traveled to St. Louis County.

St. Charles County police alerted the St. Louis County Police Department's auto theft unit, which was already active in the area, of the carjacking. St. Louis County police tried to pull over the suspect, but he crashed while trying to flee.

Police said the vehicle struck two to three bystander vehicles and then crashed into a pump at the Mobil on the Run in the 9400 block of Page Avenue, police said. No one was injured.

A fire ignited at the pump following the crash and was doused by firefighters, police said.

Dent was arrested near the scene of the crash after a brief foot chase. His bond was set at $100,000.

Police did not provide any further details regarding the incident.
