Camera catches drunk driver crash into police cruiser, officers say

The driver was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, the Fairview Heights Police Department said.

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — An alleged drunk-driving crash was caught on police camera after it happened steps from an officer, video from the Fairview Heights Police Department shows.

An officer pulled over a vehicle early Wednesday morning after a traffic violation near the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and 3rd Avenue, the department said on a Facebook post. One of the vehicle's occupants had an active arrest warrant, so another officer arrived at the scene to assist.

The second police car was parked behind the first with its lights on when it was hit by another vehicle, officers said. Body camera footage shows the collision happened after the civilian vehicle traveled through a nearby intersection.

DRUNK DRIVER CRASHES INTO FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS POLICE VEHICLE On Wednesday just after midnight a Fairview Heights Police Officer pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation on St. Clair Ave by 3rd Street. An occupant had an active arrest warrant. A back up Police Officer arrived on scene and helped take the wanted person into custody. The second police car with emergency lights on was parked behind the front police car giving cover to it. A vehicle traveling from behind the police cars crashed into the rear police car as the wanted person was being placed into the front police car. No one was inside of the rear police car and no one was injured. The driver of the crashed car, Elesia R. Golliday Brown, Alorton, IL, performed standardized field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol (DUI). She was arrested and booked. Per Pre-Trial Release she was released from custody. Driving drunk and failing to follow Scott’s Move Over Laws kills many first responders nationwide. Slow down. Don’t drive drunk. And move over! Required by the Illinois Supreme Court: All suspects charged with a crime are considered innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

The department posted the video on Facebook, asking the public to slow down, not drive drunk, and move over.

"Driving drunk and failing to follow Scott’s Move Over Laws kills many first responders nationwide," the post said.
