ST. LOUIS — The FBI is investigating a February assault in the Central West End that investigators say was racially motivated.

According to the FBI, the attack happened at a bus stop near the intersection of Delmar Boulevard and North Sarah Street at about 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 6. Investigators said the suspect struck the victim in the face with a concrete brick, knocking the victim unconscious.

The FBI said the suspect, who is Black, was heard saying "I hate white people" and stating that he was going to "hurt this guy." Multiple people were at the bus stop, but the victim was the only white person, the FBI said.

The FBI released a photo of the suspect. They said he was between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-10 and between 140 and 160 pounds.

“These are very unsettling cases," said Joe Weston, a Supervisory Special Agent investigating the case for the FBI. "These are message crimes. These are crimes that not only impact the victim. With the nature of these crime what happens is it impacts a greater community as well because they're trying to send a message through that hate."
