Charges filed after man found fatally shot in north St. Louis street

The victim was found dead in the street at the intersection of Mimika and Gladys avenues.

ST. LOUIS — Charges were filed Thursday after a man was shot and killed early last week in north St. Louis.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Greg Eugene Burns, 47, with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Jeremy West. Police announced

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officers found West, 39, in the street at the intersection of Mimika and Gladys avenues on Feb. 1 at about 2:30 a.m. He had been shot in the head.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to a probable cause statement, surveillance footage showed a silver SUV pull up to where West was standing on the sidewalk. A passenger, later identified as Burns, called West's name.

The video showed Burns get out of the SUV and shoot West as he was approaching, police said.

The surveillance video then cut off. West was shot multiple times.

Investigators tracked down the SUV's owner and interviewed his son, who said Burns and another man were using the car that night. He said West was wearing a red top and black shorts, which matched what the shooter was seen wearing on the surveillance video.

The man who had used the car with Burns admitted to police that he used it to drop off Burns at his home after a night of using drugs. He said Burns asked him to pull over when he saw West on the sidewalk, and Burns then got out and shot West several times.

Burns was arrested on Wednesday. A judge ordered that he be held without bond.
