ST. LOUIS — St. Louis prosecutors last week refiled upgraded charges against a man accused of fatally shooting an 18-year-old who was breaking into his truck in 2022.
Arnaud Jones, 42, is now facing a count of first-degree murder, upgraded from second-degree. He is also facing four counts of armed criminal action, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and one count each of first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. He was ordered to be held without bond.
Police said Jones admitted to fatally shooting Corion Love and injuring another person who were breaking into his car.
According to a probable cause statement, in September 2022, Love and an accomplice were driving around Jones' neighborhood breaking into cars. The pair pulled up to Jones' truck, which was parked below his loft on the 1100 block of Lucas Avenue. The pair removed the truck's front window without breaking it and Love began entering through the open window.
While he was halfway inside the truck, Jones fired four shots from the window of his loft, striking both men. Love was dropped off at Barnes-Jewish Hospital by his accomplice and died a short time later. His accomplice sought medical help the next day.
During a police interview, Jones admitted to firing "warning shots" after seeing someone breaking into his truck from his window but claimed he didn't realize he hit anyone. He also said at the time that he didn't remember where he put the gun afterward.
Jones was originally arrested in the case in January 2023, and charges were filed in May. Those charges were dismissed four days before trial was set to begin and refiled on Feb. 15 as first-degree murder charges.
Jones entered a not guilty plea on Monday.
