Man faces charges after entering a Clayton building, attempting to burglarize, rob residents, police say

The suspect has been taken into custody and is facing several charges.

CLAYTON, Mo. — Victims of a Clayton burglary and attempted robbery were not physically injured on Friday afternoon. 

Around 2:30 p.m. officers from the Clayton Police Department responded to a call about a burglary in progress at the 6300 block of Northwood Avenue in Clayton. According to the police report, Richard McMullan, 36, made his way inside a building and forcibly tried to steal a woman's car by showing and threatening her with a dangerous instrument.

McMullan then forced himself inside an occupied apartment where he stole from the home, police said. 

Afterward, witnesses told police McMullan fled the scene. 

Police said they quickly found and arrested McMullan on North Rosebury Avenue and DeMun Avenue. 

The St. Louis County Prosecutor's Office issued charges on Saturday morning for McMullan. The charges include first-degree attempted robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, and unlawful use of a weapon. 

McMullan is being held at the St. Louis County Justice Center with a $300,000 bond set.
