Well-known criminal defense attorney represents man charged with assaulting Ferguson police officer

Police said Elijah Gantt attacked Officer Travis Brown on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's death.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — An East St. Louis man charged with assaulting a Ferguson police officer remains in jail, as of Monday afternoon.

Brown remains in the hospital, after police said Elijah Gantt attacked him on the 10th anniversary of Michael Brown's death.

Gantt was in court for his bond reduction hearing on Monday morning.

The defendant faced a judge and a room full of people there to support Officer Travis Brown.

The four rows were packed and even overflowed to the back, where officers stood in unison.

Brown's family was there along with the Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Wesley Bell communicated with the family and loved ones about the latest updates in the case.

Well-known criminal defense attorney Scott Rosenblum also walked into the courtroom and spoke to Gantt, which is his newest client. Another attorney in his office, Isaac Dodd, is also on the case.

A judge told attorneys, Gantt waived his right to a bond reduction hearing, which means Gantt remains in jail with the same bond.

The 28-year-old was ordered to be held on a bond of $500,000, cash only, no 10% authorized, no weapons/drugs/alcohol/social media, must stay 1,500 feet away from the Ferguson Police Department and have no contact with victims.

5 On Your Side reached out to Rosenblum for a statement. He said they did not have one.

Saint Louis University Law Professor Anders Walker gave some insight.

"The decision to waive a bond reduction may be due to the fact that there is little chance of reduction to begin with," Walker said.

Defense attorneys could file another bond reduction hearing, as well.

Gantt's attorneys will review the case and continue the discovery process.

"Mr. Rosenblum is one of the best defense attorneys in town. The defendant will remain in jail and lawyers may also want to wait for things to calm down," Walker added.

Officer Brown enters his second week in the ICU.

His family recently said he's made small but significant signs of progress.

"Because the officer is seriously injured, the defendant is looking at 10 to 30 years in prison. Mr. Rosenblum may be interested in a plea deal to reduce the sentence and not even a worry about a trial," Walker said.

A GoFundMe for Officer Brown has raised more than $140,000. In order to donate, click here.

Gantt has a preliminary hearing on September 11th.
