Jury selected in case of volleyball player who lost legs in crash

A jury was seated to try Daniel Riley, accused of striking a Tennessee teen in town for a volleyball tournament in February 2023.

ST. LOUIS — A jury was selected Monday in the trial of a man accused of striking a Tennessee teen, severing both of her legs in a car crash.

Daniel Riley, 21, was charged with second-degree assault, armed criminal action and driving without a license following the Feb. 18, 2023 incident.

Janae Edmondson, then 17, was pinned against another car after police said Riley sped through the intersection of North 11th and St. Charles streets in downtown St. Louis.

Riley was supposed to be on house arrest, and the case led to the resignation of St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.

The jury consisting of seven women and five men was selected.

More than 400 St. Louisians were called to the jury pool in the high-profile case. Only 100 showed up.

Opening statements in the case are expected to start Tuesday morning. Janae Edmondson's father is expected to be called to the stand first.

The trial will not be live-streamed.
